Steve and Larry, I would be willing to keep FOY data for one group of moths, preferably geometers. I could use an Excel file, and forward it to whomever is the main coordinator. Jean obrist ----- Original Message ----- From: Stephen Stedman To: tn-butterflies@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ; TN-moths Cc: Doug Bruce Sent: Wednesday, January 20, 2010 11:32 AM Subject: [tn-moths] 2010 foy and bamona data Douglas Bruce has volunteered to compile the 2010 FOY data for butterflies in TN; he will forward monthly updates to me, and I will post them at my website in basically the same format as was used during 2008 and 2009 (although I am giving Doug free rein to modify the way the FOY data are presented if he so chooses). You may notify Doug of your FOY data via TN-Butterflies, or you may contact him directly, or you may do both. In the interests of keeping everyone in the loop, I recommend the first or last of these approaches. I will continue to process BAMONA data (i.e., new county records or records of rare species) for butterflies in TN during 2010. Please send BAMONA records to me as you accumulate them, providing photographs as email attachments whenever possible, and please copy TN-Butterflies with your message so that everyone stays aware of updates to county butterfly lists. If you are unsure about your i.d. of a potential new county record butterfly, you can send me photos; after the i.d. has been verified (if it can be), then you could send a message to TN-Butterflies about the sighting and include the photo. Also, please send BAMONA data to me so that data for one county is in one message; if you have data for more than one county, please send one message per county. Using the photo labeling format described at my website is helpful but not imperative. At some point in 2010, the BAMONA website is going to add a new data submission feature that will allow those with photos of county record 'flies and moths to submit them online. I'm not sure when this will happen, but when it does, sending your county record data to BAMONA online will be the best way to go. However, if it turns out that the online photo submission program does not allow photo to be extracted, I would very much appreciate getting a copy of any photo of a county record butterfly for my files. If the program allows me to copy the photo, then this request will be unnecessary. More on this later. Jason Roberts will continue to process BAMONA data for moths during 2010. Please be patient with Jason as his task is an enormous one that is probably going to take several years to bring up to date. Those addicted to instant gratification need to become patient if they are into documenting the TN moths. We are lucky that someone with Jason's qualifications has agreed to handle the documentation of moths in TN, so let's do what we can to keep him happy. The situation with FOY data for moths in TN is up in the air. It would be nice to get a start on this task, so that there is some information out there for potential mothfolk to access when they want to know when a certain moth species is flying. However, no one has stepped up to say she or he will compile FOY moth data for 2010. I hope someone does. Given that there will eventually be more than 1000 moths for which to provide FOY data, it will probably be necessary to limit the species for which FOY data are offered at first, and then expand the list as volunteers to compile the data are found in future years. Many thanks to Ken Childs for continuing to operate TN-Butterflies and to Larry McDaniel for getting TN-Moths started. These listservs are probably the most valuable resources that lepfolk in TN now have, so let's use them to further our understanding of our Lepidoptera. Good lepping, Steve Stedman Cookeville, Putnam County
