Following the posting of the latest batch of county butterfly records for Tennessee, I checked on the status of some of the more common 'flies to see how far from total blueness on the BAMONA map of the state they now are. My cursory look at the maps of most of the common species reveals that the following species lack documenation in just a few counties: Pearl Crescent 3 (Crockett, Hickman, and Robertson) Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 6 Common Buckeye 8 Sachem 9 Red-spotted Purple 9 Some species in the next largest echelon of seekers of total blueness include these: Silver-spotted Skipper 12 Spicebush Swallowtail 15 Monarch 19 Farther still from total blueness are these species: Carolina Satyr 22 Question Mark 23 Cloudless Sulphur 23 Hackberry Emperor 24 Great Spangled Fritillary 24 Orange Sulphur 24 Red Admiral 24 Variegated Fritillary 24 Gray Hairstreak 26 American Snout 26 I may have missed a few that should be in one or another of these short lists, but the species listed above probably represent most of the seekers toward the soothing calm of total map blueness. Later, Steve Stedman Cookeville (Putnam County) Note: the press of many obligations, too many really, has caused me to overlook some of the more than 200 submissions of county record 'flies that came to me from late June to early August. Please accept my apology if this has happened to you, and please draw my attention to any omissions as soon as you are able. Please send documentary photos directly to me via email attachment; many websites now make it difficult for surfers to copy photos directly from the sites; these sites are still a wonderful way to show your photos to other butterfliers, but they are now proving to be hindrance in the effort to transmit photos from one person to another. Also Note: I'll be accepting documentation (mostly photos sent to me as email attachments) for county record 'flies until the BAMONA website is updated, probably sometime in September.
