The plant is Prickly Mallow and for the short time the flowers are open, this field is swarming with butterflies! I thought about trying to get a count today but there was so much activity, it would have been impossible to do it by myself. The majority were skippers of various species but Little Yellows, Variegated Fritillaries and Cloudless Sulphurs were also taking part in the feeding frenzy. At 10:00, the flowers were closed. At noon, some were open and some were closed. At 2:00, most were closed. Anyone feel like braving the heat for a couple of hours this weekend to get a count? I have a pool although the last time I check it was 93. :-) Ken Childs Henderson, TN Chester County http://www.finishflagfarms.com ________________________________ From: kjchilds <kjchilds@xxxxxxxxx> To: TN Butterflies <TN-Butterflies@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thu, August 12, 2010 5:51:09 PM Subject: [TN-Butterflies] Re: FOY for Chester County Is the plant maybe Prickly Mallow, Sida spinosa? (photo) I really can't say this is early since I've seen them in spring before but usually the second round doesn't show here until middle October. I saw the first one at about 11:00 but I was working at the time so I braved the heat and went back out at around 2:00 and spotted 8 more. Not one of them ever landed with their wings open which seems odd to me. In the past 3 years I'd only seen one perch with its wings closed. All were feeding or laying eggs on this plant. Can anyone tell m what it is? http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_6315.jpg Laying eggs. http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_6311-Edit.jpg Ken Childs Henderson, TN Chester County http://www.finishflagfarms.com
