Love is in the air! I decided to try another quick count, this time on my neighbor's property. One of his hay fields has a lot of red clover and lately there have been good numbers of Sachems feeding on it. I was there for about 15 minutes but about 5 minutes of that was following a pair of "dancing" Spicebush Swallowtails. The 2 Pipevines in the count were coupled with the male hanging upside down with his wings closed while the female was flying. They stopped once long enough to get an ID but then flew off before I could get a shot. I'm guessing I covered about 1 acre. Sachem 100+. I gave up counting after getting close to 100. They were mostly in groups of 2 to 4 with the males doing whatever they could to show off to the females. Silver-Spotted Skipper 3 Little Yellow 3 Orange Sulphur 2 Cloudless Sulphur 3 American Lady 4 Eastern Tailed-blue 15 Black Swallowtail 3 Spicebush Swallowtail 2 Pipevine Swallowtail 2 Great Spangled Fritillary 2. There seems to be a new batch of these around right now. Variegated Fritillary 3 Here are a few shots of the Spicebush dance. The female really didn't want anything to do with the male so he finally gave up and went off to feed on his own. http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_9062.jpg http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_9069.jpg http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_9070.jpg http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p193/kjchilds/IMG_9082.jpg I apologize for sending so many emails today but I have to share the fun with someone!
