September 13, 2009 This is not a Tennessee butterfly, but it's close. This afternoon, while butterflying and birding along River Road (NC-1304) in Madison County, North Carolina, I found a Leonard's Skipper. The site was 1.6 miles upstream of Paint Rock (0.7 mile downstream of Murray Branch Recreation Area), and about 0.1 mile from the road in a wet spot in the big open field that is the defining feature of the area. Hot Springs is only about five or six miles farther upstream, and the Tennessee line is located at Paint Rock itself. I viewed the skipper well (both upperside and underside) for about a minute or so at very close range, using close-focus binos. The marks and color clearly distinguished it from a female Sachem or other possibly similar species. I have sought Leonard's Skipper unsuccessfully in Tennessee for over a decade. Maybe my luck is about to change. Don Miller Greeneville, Greene Co., TN
