Thanks, Doug for going above and beyond the call of duty.

From my perspective...

I have been adding ALL reported sightings, not just FOYs of
whatever nature, to a master database for this year. I don't think
users of this listserv should have to be religious about checking the
current FOY list before posting. If you have any qualms about
flooding the listserv with possibly unwanted sightings, I strongly encourage
you
to regularly email any such sightings to me off-list, at:
DougLepidoptera@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ,
even if they seem mundane.

Steve Stedman suggested* last November that it might be worthwhile to
start keeping records of both first-of-year and also last-of-year observations
by county. I agree, and I am doing that. Of course, determining the
LOY sightings actually involves keeping track of all sightings for the
whole year (because otherwise how do you know which one is last?). I am in
the process of trying to automate (or semi-automate) the
whole system with a website to help relieve the upcoming bookkeeping
burden.

We have before us the possibility of capturing an entire season of compiled
butterfly data for the whole state. This would be an important baseline
for any future efforts. My goal is to set up all of this data to
be publicly queryable online.

Potential BAMONA records are handled by Steve, not me, although I will
forward any stray submissions that come to me. The important thing is that
Steve gets the photo and observation details, and that can be accomplished
either by private email to him or by posting to the listserv. Personally,
I like seeing the details and photos on the listserv. I'm sure Steve will
weigh in with any preferences that he has.
