Hi Betty, I'm not surprised that you have Black Swallowtail cats on your Aegopodium since it is in the carrot family. I'm sure it is probably way down on its list of prefered hosts, but acceptable in a pinch. It's funny, there are lots of native carrot family member plants, but if fennel, parsley, or dill available, they always seem to go for them, even though they aren't native. Maybe they're like people and like the way they taste better! Bart Jones Memphis, Shelby County From: betjas@xxxxxxxxxxxx To: tn-butterflies@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [TN-Butterflies] Emailing: E. Black Swallowtail Cat on Aegopodium Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2010 15:28:27 -0500 Have you ever seen Eastern Black Swallowtail caterpillars eating Aegopodium? Guess they are desperate as someone ate all the fennel and parsley. I was pleasantly surprised to find about a dozen destroying my shade beauty.
