Saw an osprey flying over the water. Indigo bunting. Areas visited: South Creek entrance, area behind refuge office where bird houses are (not a good butterfly area at this time of year), roadside areas in the refuge, Woodpecker Trail (trail not mowed, returned by dirt road), Shaw Hill (gate was locked). Habitat had many fields planted in corn. Water level looked low. Ironweed, but no nectaring. Willow, river cane, pawpaw (along Woodpecker Trail), passionflower, lespedeza thick in area behind office. Lots of Widow Skimmers and other Odonata in some areas. Sulphur sp.=1, Dark swallowtail sp.=20. Pipevine Swallowtail (9), Zebra Swallowtail (6), Eastern Tiger Swallowtail ( 34), Spicebush Swallowtail (7), Cloudless Sulphur (2), Little Yellow (1), Sleepy Orange (1), Gray Hairstreak (1), Eastern Tailed-Blue (2), American Snout ( 1), Pearl Crescent (26), Question Mark (2), Eastern Comma (3), Red Admiral ( 2), Common Buckeye (14), Red-spotted Purple (19) [Note: 7 in paved road, 2 puddling on the eye of a dead gar (fish)], Viceroy (5), Carolina Satyr (1), Monarch (8) [Note: 2 nectaring on swamp milkweed (1 roosting in shade of tree around noon)], Least Skipper (1), Fiery Skipper (3), Northern Broken-Dash (1), Sachem (2), Dun Skipper (1).
