Hello Everyone!
It's that time, our first spring count will be Sat. the 15th. We will meet at
9:30 AM at the parking lot of Carroll Cabin Barrens State Natural Area. The
weather forecast looks excellent as of now, with sunny skies and 83 degrees.
Let's hope that doesn't change! Unfortunately, MeoMio's is still on a limited
schedule and not opened for lunch and Bath Springs Mercantile has gone to a
breakfast buffet on Saturdays, so we will have to bring our lunches to eat in
the field. At least we can try to coordinate a time and gather back in the
parking lot to eat together. As with all counts, please bring your $3.00 NABA
fee.
This is going to be an interesting count. I'm not sure what to expect with the
warm February we had with many spring species emerging in early March only to
have to endure another cold snap with freezing temperatures. From what I've
seen at Meeman-Shelby here in Memphis, the early stuff is gone, but other
spring species are still flying, but in slightly less numbers. We may get some
of the May stuff like cloudywings and Dusted Skippers. Who knows, we might
have a surprise return of a Golden-banded Skipper! In any event, it will be
nice to get outside with friends and see some butterflies!
Please let me know if you plan to come and help out.
See you on the 15th!
Bart Jones
