I took a short, late-afternoon trip to Loudon County today, and found a Black Swallowtail nectaring on thistle at Fort Loudon Dam, down by the water. If approved, this would be a BAMONA record for Loudon County. While I was kneeling in the waist-deep weeds photographing this butterfly, I could hear a voice speaking on a bullhorn somewhere out over the water. I gradually became aware that the bullhorn-voice was saying reassuring things like, "we see you up there," and "stay where you are," and "we're sending someone to get you." I never quite figured out what was going on. There is a bridge across the dam, and those are the kinds of things that might be said to a suicidal jumper, but I couldn't see anyone in peril. Traffic continued to cross the bridge in both directions.
