All, I received four emails in response to the Loudon Co. Pieris photos. The replies were unanimous in identifying these as West Virginia Whites. Thanks to all who replied. April 10, 2010, 14:30-16:00 Melton Hill Dam Park, Loudon Co., TN 70F 1. Ten+ Pieris sp. (FOY & maybe BAMONA - see photos). I think these are the early-spring, unmarked form of the Cabbage White males. However, the Cech/Tudor book states that West Virginia White males can be unmarked in the south, including the hindwing veins. Comments? These were nectaring on various wildflowers in open woods. They seldom flew more than a couple feet above the ground. The dorsal side of their bodies was dark. Either the Cabbage White or the West Virginia White would be a BAMONA record for Loudon, if these photos are actually sufficient to provide distinguishing features. (And if not, I will certainly have opportunities later in the season to shoot an unambiguous Cabbage White for Loudon.)
