Stayed home in west Knox County this morning while my body recuperated from the Easter feast at my daughter's place yesterday. It was a beautiful day for feeder watching and I had some interesting expeiences. Rare visitors to the yard, a small flock of four Chipping Sparrows briefly fed under the sunflower seed feeder. A Blue Jay who had landed on the deck beside me looking for peanuts started cackling like a chicken; Blue Jays make a lot of different sounds but that was a new one on me. Most interesting, one American Crow was grooming another in a nearby tree, digging vigorously for something at the back of its companion's neck. This went on for about five minutes before the crow being groomed flew a short distance away. I wonder if this is courting behavior. I have two bluebird boxes, on opposite sides of the house. Eastern Bluebirds are the only species that has ever nested in either, typically alternating between them during the course of a season. They are very late building their first nest this year, perhaps because of the cold weather. Other years there have been eggs in mid to late March; this year it's April 5 and they're still working on a nest. I've seen bluebirds at both the boxes and the last couple days have found nests in each. One has a typical bluebird nest of grasses and this morning a female bluebird approached it with grass in her bill but she looked nervous and flew off before entering it. The second nestbox has the beginnings of a mossy looking nest and this morning I saw a Carolina Chickadee at the box.
