this morning we went birding quite by accident. out cat brought in a very tiny bird and immediately released it. after quite some time of trying to catch it, the cat leaped 4 feet into the air on one pass and caught the bird a second time. earl went over to help the bird and it flew right into his hand so he put it in our canner pot til i could check it out and get a photo because we couldn't identify it. it was about the size of a hummingbird-tiny bit larger with a buff breast and whiter at the rump. i believe it had white tips on the underside of it's tail. the back and head were solid black/dark brown. beak much shorter than a hummingbird but not a short seed eating sort either-more like a wren beak. i looked thru my references and find nothing. as it turned out, when i opened the canner just a bit to see if it was still alive it fluttered about so i opened it further to snap a photo with my already focused camera. unexpectedly the bird flew out of the pot and into the living room where i finally managed to convince it to go to another room where i closed the doors to trap it there and opened the back door and ushered him out. he flew away like nothing ever happened. guess he'll have some good stories to tell his friends. can anyone offer an ID for this tiny fellow?
