The warm days of late have gotten me to thinking about bird counts this spring, so I thought I would put a couple of them out there and see if there is any interest among the Tennessee birding cohort. The Putnam Count Spring Bird Count, the 41st in that county, will be conducted May 10 with May 11 as a back-up date in case of inclement weather the preceding day. I suspect that this date will be a popular one but wanted to offer up Putnam County as a spring bird count option for anyone seeking a change of birdscene. For retirees and others who are free on week-ends, there will be a bird count in Morgan County April 29, a Tuesday, with April 30 as the back-up date. There have been a few one-party spring counts conducted in Morgan in the past but no organized effort with multiple parties has taken place as best as I can determine. This county includes Frozen Head State Natural Area where a lot of attention needs to be focused during any spring count there; with its many high-elevation breeding species (Veery, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Canada Warbler, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak, to name some of the more interesting species), Frozen Head would benefit from a couple of hiking parties within its confines, if any such folks be out there and be looking for some miles to walk. Give a holler via email off-line if so. Good bird counting, Steve Stephen J.
