This time last year, I discovered that pigs really can fly, only they are not called "pigs"; they are called "Rose-breasted Grosbeaks." For about a month last year, we marvelled as these beautiful gluttons tore through bag after 50 pound bag of sunflower seed at record clips. At their peak, we had SEVEN on the tray feeder at one time! It was quite a sight to see. In any event, our first one for this season was on the feeder when I got up this morning. So, I will have to go to the Wood Thrush Shop this afternoon to buy some reinforcements (i.e., another couple of bags of seed). Also in the yard this morning were several neotropical migrants, including 6-8 Yellow-rumped Warblers, a pretty little Nashville Warbler, and a couple of Palm Warblers to go with our resident Great-crested Flycatchers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Yellow-throated Vireo. Many of these, as well as at least 4 Chipping Sparrows, were feeding on the blooms on the large Walnut Tree that sits in our front yard. -- Chris Sloan chris.sloan@xxxxxxxxxxx Nashville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation.
