Is there any place nearby where they are getting tainted seeds? Has anyone
sown a field or garden lately with seeds treated with insect-repellent or
anti-fungal ingredient? It seems that if it were your feeders, that all birds
would be affected, not just juvenile finches.
Are they flying into a picture window? I have a purple male that is recovering
right now. He seems to be unscathed physically, but he's a bit tipsy, and only
wants to tuck his head under his wing and sleep. We have around 300 finches
and siskins at our feeders now, and only once in a while does one do itself in
by flying into a window. The juveniles may not be as window wary.

  Subject: [TN-Bird] sick finches

Like many others, we have had an extraordinary number of finches,
including many pine siskins, at our home feeders this winter. In the
last several weeks, we have noticed some of these birds are getting sick
and dying. Since it is now to the point where we have 1-2 birds per day
getting this way, we want to try to determine if there is something we
should be doing to prevent this. At any given time of the day, we will
have 50-100 finches. We have read where you should sterile-clean the
feeders about once per month can help. In addition to the feeders, we
keep 2-3 bird baths for drinking/washing that we clean/change nearly
everyday. Do you think this is a normal result of so many birds ? The
sick birds seem to be younger, adolescents.
