With only about half of the reports for the Knoxville CBC held Saturday, 5 January in so far, we currently stand at 93 species with several expected species still possible including Red-winged Blackbird, Barred Owl, Pine Siskin, and several ducks. We did get most of our less-common target species plus a few really good birds and one exceptional find that would be a new species for the count. Some highlights below... RED CROSSBILL, 5 birds at Haw Ridge Park in Anderson Co reported by Ed LeGrand. Seen circling overhead in flight and heard giving the "jip jip" flight call. Though unlikely to be relocated, in addition to Haw Ridge Park, Oak Ridge Memorial Garden and the UT Arboretum would be other good, nearby places to look for these birds. Common Loon, 1 at Louisville Pt Park found by 2 parties Great Egret, 2 (so far) at the usual spot... Lackey Creek in Louisville Bald Eagle, good numbers, for example, I had 3 Sandhill Crane, 15 at Lackey Creek reported by Tom Howe Dunlin, 2 at Lackey Creek in Louisville first reported by Tom Howe and relocated by Warren Bielenberg and Keith Watson Greater Yellowlegs, 1 at Cove Island reported (and photoed) by Chris Welsh American Woodcock, I had 1 peenting bird before dawn in Louisville Rufous Hummingbird, 2 (staked out and banded) Ruby-throated Hummingbird, 1 (staked out and banded) Red-headed Woodpecker, 1 in Louisville Loggerhead Shrike, 1 on Roy Goddard Rd in Louisville, I send up to 4 parties to check for this bird throughout the day.
