This afternoon, I was mowing the grass next to the lake behind my house in nw Shelby County when noticed something scurrying ahead of the mower into the edge of the wooded hillside. At first, I thought that it was a chipmunk, then a quail, but when it flushed I realized that it was a woodcock, a new species for the yard.
