8 May 2013
Kingsport, TN

In the course of birding several sites in Kingsport, I checked behind
Riverfront Seafood for night-herons, etc.; but, to my amazement I saw
the female HARLEQUIN DUCK. The last report from local or visiting birders
had been 13 Mar. However, Scott Somershoe received a photo with
a late Apr date stamped on it. Local birders check this site often for a
variety
of birds, but had not seen the Harlequin since mid Mar. Go figure!

Also found today in Kingsport:

D-c Cormorant - still 2 occupied nests on island near Netherland Inn,
but a newly occupied nest in heron rookery below Ft. Henry Dam.
Great Blue Heron - 8 nests near Neth. Inn & 33 nests below Ft. Henry Dam.

Am. Bittern - 1, at Meadowview
Blk-cr. Night-Heron - 3 ad., below Ft. Henry Dam.
Yellow-cr. Night-Heron - 3 occupied nests on Reedy Creek greenbelt
Red-shld. Hawk - 1 ad. near nest, also on Reedy Cr.
Virginia Rail - 1 at Meadowview
Blue-hd. Vireo - 1 along Reedy Cr. - a bit late at low elevation
Warbling Vireo - 1, along riverfront greenbelt
Veery - 2
Wood Thrush - 2
Yellow Warbler - 2
Canada Warbler - 1
Yellow-br. Chat - 1
Swamp Sparrow - 1
both orioles - 4+

Nice morning.
