Last week, stayed late at work, so was passing through downtown Jackson
(Madison County) just at dusk. In the parking lot of the Civic Center (Hwy
45 just south of downtown) there were thousands of purple martins, mobbing
the streetlights, the small trees, even the crapemyrtles. I guess I thought
it might be a migratory flock, but then the station superintendent reported
it also, on two different days, other than the day I saw them, so they must
be returning here each night. I went to a purple martin site that requested
that "new" roosts be reported, but since there was one already reported on
a golf course a short distance away, I thought this may be the same or an
overflow. Any opinions on whether this could be a separate roost? Should be
reported?
