[TN-Bird] iPods

Does anyone have experience using the preloaded iPods for bird songs in the
field? My old iPod is dying and I have to upgrade, so is there any advantage
to buying the preloaded ones vs. buying just a regular iPod and loading it
myself with something like the Stokes CD's? The preloaded ones (from
Birdjam.com) have additional software that adds habitat playlists, scientific
names, and mnemonic sounds. I read the review from Birder's World, but paying
an extra $60 for software that seems to have only a couple of advantages over
loading your own CD's seems a bit much. Is it worth it?
And what sort of speaker have you found works best?
