Jan. 18, 2009 Cuba Landing, Duck River Unit, Tennessee Nat. Wildlife Refuge, Humphreys Co. TN. & Hatchie Nat. Wildlife Refuge, Haywood Co.TN Making a quick trip to Memphis and back for birthday luncheon on Sunday, Sarah Scott and I stopped at a couple of easy birding spots off Interstate 40. At Cuba Landing the shallow end of the bay held lots ducks, with Sarah getting her best look so far at male No. Pintails. Bonaparte's gulls were over the river, an adult Bald Eagle was perched above a slough on west side of the river. At Hatchie Refuge O'Neal lake was about 50% frozen (south end) so ducks and geese were concentrated in the middle and north end. Lots of geese and ducks, and a good variety. Among the hundreds of Canada geese many seemed smaller to me but I was not able to make a Cackling out of any of 'em.
