Probably not. I bought a Nikon N60 with a 35-80 zoom at Wal-mart a
couple years ago. It is a very satisfactory camera for 95 percent of
what I shoot, which is mostly journalism, large flowers and adorable
shots of my cats. It is almost a macro, almost a telephoto and almost a
wide angle. It's almost foolproof as well. The built-in flash is great
and the battery lasts for years.
But it's that other 5 percent of what you shoot which calls for
specialty equipment where the almost doesn't work. The only identifiable
bird I've taken with it was a Clark's Nutcracker that came down to our
feet while we were eating lunch. On the same trip I also got a great
shot of a Bighorn Sheep that was standing in the road, apparently
licking road salt, from about 10 feet. For shooting small birds you need
at least a 300 mm. lens, if you can get less than 50 feet from them. .
Once again, I'm talking about film here. With a digital camera you can
probably safely double the size of your image with enhancement on the
computer. Those who know this medium better can tell you more.
