I noticed a patagial tagged Ring-billed gull at KY Dam. Several others have reported them in KY. Here is the reply I received after reporting it. Please report your bird. Hap Chambers Murray, KY Thank you for the report of the green patagial tagged gull. The bird you observed was part of a marked population that was involved in an egg oiling study done at the request of the city of Chicago. The city is concerned about gulls because avian fecal deposits are contributing to increased E. coli levels in near-shore waters, causing swimming bans at Chicago's Lake Michigan beaches. We wanted to determine if the marked gulls were using city beaches and if oiling the eggs would change the behavior of the gulls in regards to beach use. We marked a total of 724 gulls in the Chicago area with either orange (150 tags), green (202 tags), blue (222 tags) or yellow (150) wing tags. Now, I would like to learn if there is a difference in reporting rates for the 4 colors. Should you spot any other tagged birds we would appreciate learning of their location. Thank you again for your help and your sharp eyes in spotting the wing tags! Tom Thomas W.
