[TN-Bird] banded Common Tern

This afternoon I conducted a heronry survey on Old Hickory Lake mostly in
Sumner Co. The biggest surprise was a very late, and banded, Common Tern
that I was able to photograph well enough to read the last three digits off
the band. There's a reasonable chance that the bird banding lab will be
able to retrieve the record on that basis. I will post some photos later,
and will post an update if I hear anything from the bird banding lab. As a
teaching point, I didn't pay much attention because I initially assumed it
was a Forster's since that's the "expected" small white tern. It wasn't
until I looked at it a second time that I realized it was a Common. The
lesson: don't assume.
Another highlight was a Common Loon. That, in itself, is not terribly
unusual on the large lakes this late, but most of those birds are second
year non-breeders, and this one was in full breeding plumage.

Lastly, we found a Baltimore Oriole nest in one of the heronries (the one
south from Loch 3).
