I was with a handful of folks at Cheatham WMA yesterday. After standing = in the same spot with the gang chatting for about 3 min, a woodcock got up = and flew off about 3 feet from us. Location was on top of a ridge with = mature forest on one side of the trail and early successional habitat with = a few remaining tall trees on the other. The early successional side had = lots of blackberry and young yellow poplar. No one in the group, = including folks that had done lots of bird surveys there, had ever seen a = woodcock at Cheatham before. Interesting sighting.
