March 25-26-27-28, 2011 Shelby Co. TN Friday, I had a visiting birder from Israel out touring Shelby Farms, Ensley Bottoms in TN and areas of DeSoto and Tunica Co. MS. The northeast winds and colder temps made for fewer birds but interesting stops. Shelby Farms produced no Uplands but did have scattered Golden-Plovers, Pectoral and Least Sandpipers, Killdeer plus Wilson's Snipe. The Black-necked Stilt pair seen earlier in the week at Ensley had evidently moved on and few shorebirds were sprinkled around the disturbed habitat. A different pair of Black-necked(male plumage very different) were present Sunday at TVA Lake. The Red-necked Grebe was sleeping at Robco but it now had the company of a Common Loon and a second had joined them by Sunday (did not see grebe on Monday?) along with 7 Red-breasted Merganser. Bonaparte's Gulls and Forster's Terns had joined the Ring-billed Gulls at Robco along with hundreds of swallows (Tree, Rough-wing, Barn, 1 Cliff) and Purple Martins. Another group of 7 Red-breasted also showed up on Sunday at TVA Lake. A second trip by Horn Lake Cutoff on Sunday afternoon produced 2 American Bitterns. The Great Horned Owl nests at Ensley and along the levee in MS have single very large young still to fledge. Big time numbers of Wind Birds were seen in MS and AR Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Numbers of Golden-Plovers were low on Friday, almost non-existent on Saturday during rain but grew in leaps and bounds Sunday and Monday but only 1 Upland was seen on levee in MS Sunday. Jeff R.
