Well, the show at Hiawassee this morning was awesome! After a couple of hours of cold feet and numb hands, we were treated to the completely indescribable sight of the 14 whooping cranes leaving Hiawassee Refuge behind the Ultralights. It took a bit of scrambling around for the pilots to convince the cranes that yes, they DID want to fly south; but that just made for great viewing for about 50 of us huddled around the gazebo watching! After hearing Joe talk last week about the challenges of leading the cranes, actually seeing it happen was incredible! Worth the early rising and the drive and the cold, for sure!! Knoxville's Lyn Bales gave an impromptu interview to Migration Operation's cameraman, and of course did a great job. Hope we'll get to see that on TV sometime! Good work, Heather and crew! We'll see you next year!
