I just got a report through the TOS website of an immature white ibis seen
on Sunday, 8/7, in White County. Following is the description I received.
The bird is readily identifiable from the photo, which (I hope) is attached.
"Last Sunday I was kayaking on the Calf Killer River just north east of
Sparta, TN. We saw a wading bird that was unlike anything I have ever
seen. It was maybe 20 inches from tail to tip of bill with a down-turned
bill. When it would fly away from us, its upper rear, just above the tail
was white. Otherwise it appeared to be mostly gray with a white underbelly
and darker gray wings. I am attaching the only (shakey) photo we could get
of the bird along with the only wading birds I could find that were similar
in size and color. What do you make of it? I think the immature White
Ibis is the closest but have no idea why one would be this far north."
