Nine 12 meter mist nets were opened from 7am to 3pm on 18 days between 2 Sept and 22 Sept at Whigg Meadow in Cherokee National Forest, Monroe Co. TN. In this, our 9th year of banding, a record total number of 1270 birds were banded (previous high 1138). These numbers included 46 species most numerous (as usual) were Tennessee Warblers which comprised about half of our captures. Highlights include 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, Golden-winged Warbler, Cedar Waxwing, Philadelphia Vireo, Trail's Flycatcher and Cape-may Warbler. Also of note were several Veerys which appeared to be of the western subspecies. We also caught our 1st ever Carolina Wren which are rarely seen at this high elevation (5000ft) meadow. Thanks to all who helped with banding chores and to Cherokee National Forest for permitting and logistics. We had at least one return of a banded Tennessee Warbler from a previous year which constitutes our 6th return of this species from a previous year. Over 1% of the after hatching year TEWAs we catch carry bands from previous years. Although this may seem a small percent, this return rate is extremely high for transient species. Hope you will join us for our 10th anniversary year in 07 when we hope to extend the banding period from 3 weeks to 4.
