Alice Loftin and I birded for several hours today in Greene County, Cocke County, and Madison County (NC). Most of our time was spent in the Cherokee National Forest in Greene County, but we also crossed Hurricane Gap into the Pisgah National Forest in Madison County and spent a little over an hour in the Hot Springs area. We returned to Greene via Highway 25/70 and Highway 107. Birds were plentiful, and we recorded the following year firsts: Broad-winged Hawk (Greene); Ruffed Grouse (Greene); Yellow-throated Vireo (Greeneville); Red-eyed Vireo (2 Greene); Northern Parula (2 Greene, 1 Cocke, 1 Madison); Black-throated Blue Warbler (7 Greene, 2 Madison); Yellow-throated Warbler (2 Cocke, 1 Madison); Black-and-white Warbler (6 Greene, 2 Madison); Worm-eating Warbler (4 Greene); Ovenbird (2 Greene); Common Yellowthroat (Greene): Hooded Warbler (4 Greene, several Madison).
