Here is another coincidence. Yesterday, driving back from the family farm at Sessums, Mississippi, I was below Tupelo on Highway 45 when a bird swooped alongisde the car and turned into the wind hovering with its head away from me. From my vantage point (beneath) I could see it had a white belly, and its tail and the tips of its wings were dark, almost gull-like in markings, but it flew like a raptor. I didn't turn around and go back because of the car being full of peacefully sleeping dogs who would wake and want out if it appeared we were stopping, but when I got home and looked at my bird books, I kept going back to the kite page and studying them as the best fit. I don't think the tail was forked, but my glimpse was brief. I was 15 or 20 miles below Tupelo in a very open area of cropland...
