Subject: [TN-Bird] Updated Directions for Northern Wheatear
The bird continued to be seen thru noon today. It is doubtful that Tony King or
I will be at the location much more so here are some additional details to
assist you with locating the bird.
Here is Roff Hoff's original directions which has gotten most everyone to the
location with some clarifications added.
The entrance to Windy Hill Farm is on a road called Poplar Springs Blair Bend
Rd. (Poplar Springs Road is accessed from Poplar Ridge Road which is 14 miles
from I75 exit 81). Once you turn onto Poplar Springs road, go about a mile. The
entrance to the farm is on the right. (This road thru the farm is call Breck
Ellison Road which is what will show up when you gps the eBird coordinates).
Go up the gravel drive, past a small house on the left, over the top of the
hill (stay left) and down the other side until you see a cow pasture on the
left (the field on the left just before the road bends to the right).
The bird mostly works the fence line along the road but can be seen anywhere
including on the ground and in the big tree in the field. Look for the
prominent white rump and upper tail feathers when it flies. Often resembles a
bluebird by perching on a post then flying down to the ground to catch an
insect.
There is plenty space for parking on the side of the gravel farm road and STAY
ON THE ROAD. Please do not block the road. This is a working farm. The property
manager has been kind enough to allow birders to come try to see the wheatear.
