Hey TN Birders, here is some information about our upcoming field trips!
July 22- Radnor Lake State Park - To beat the heat, we will meet at 7:00 a.m.
in the West Parking lot off Granny White Pike in front of the Visitor’s Center,
1160 Otter Creek Road, Nashville, TN. You may want to bring water, snacks,
mosquito repellant.
Radnor is always a good place to find birds, even in July. Summer birds include
a mix of eastern woodland breeding species, including Red-eyed and White-eyed
Vireos, Scarlet Tanagers, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Kentucky Warblers, Louisiana
Waterthrushes, Prothonotary Warblers and others. Wood Ducks and Canada Geese
nest around the lake as well.
August 26 - Shelby Bottoms - We will start at 7:00 a.m. to make the best of the
cooler morning. You may want to bring water, snacks, mosquito/ tick repellant.
We will start at the main trailhead. The entrance is at the end of Davidson
Street, just east of the railroad trestle separating Shelby Park and Shelby
Bottoms. From I-65/I-24, take Exit 49 (the first exit north of the Cumberland
River) and go east on Shelby Avenue. Turn right (south) onto South 5th Street
to the T-intersection with Davidson Street. Turn left (east) onto Davidson and
follow it past the stone entrance columns into Shelby Park, continue on
Davidson Street to the Shelby Bottoms Greenway parking area under the railroad
bridge.
Some birds we hope to see and hear are White-eyed Vireos, Gray Catbirds, Brown
Thrashers, Prairie Warblers, Common Yellowthroats, Yellow-breasted Chats, Field
Sparrows, Indigo Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, Orchard Orioles, Tree Swallows and
Eastern Bluebirds, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows. The area can also be
good for migrant songbirds during the fall, and it is one of the best places in
the Nashville area to observe Olive-sided Flycatchers during late August.
