July 9, 2009 Miss. Rv. Ensley Bottoms President's Island The Mississippi has fallen 12 feet and sandbars have been sticking their heads up but there will be a 3 foot hiccup that will erase any trace of many the next few days. Anyway, Least Terns are staying out on the river now instead of backwater areas and today I had my first Black Terns. As usual they were an adult with a youngster out from Mud Island. Western breeders are getting harder to locate on President's Island but there are still 2 nests where Western Kingbirds are feeding young at the nest; one has a few birds that look ready to leave while the other has two adults feeding very small young. I saw 3 hybrids being fed by an adult but no Scissor-tails. They are weed whacking the far levee at TVA Lake so no Black-bellied Ducks today but I'm sure the bachelors will return. At the "Pits" I found my first returning Lesser Yellowlegs and some Least Sandpipers plus lots of young Black-necked Stilts. Four adult Black-necks towered off the ground and chased a Turkey Vulture off. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
