Hi folks, I don't think I've mentioned that Gar Secrist, our summer research intern, has been writing the Tremont banding reports this season. Here's the latest. Tremont's fourth banding day (MAPS Period 6) was somewhat the opposite of last week's banding - we had much more diversity (six species instead of one) and fewer Lousiana Waterthrush. Only two of the seven birds captured were LOWAs. We have, so far, had 27 LOWA captures. The station record is 34, so we may surpass that this year. And most have been juveniles. We are starting to get female birds with wrinkled (or, in MAPS jargon, "4") brood patches, and adults molting wing feathers, which goes well with our observations of lots of fledglings around. I think nesting season is about over for all but the AMGOs. It seems to have been a good year for baby birds. The capture totals are: 1 Carolina Wren (recapture) 1 Chipping Sparrow (released unbanded due to bird stress) 1 Eastern Pheobe 1 Indigo Bunting 2 Louisiana Waterthrush 1 Ovenbird Our total number of captures for the season is now 43. We are now somewhat behind last year's mid-season total of 51. The station was visited by campers from Tremont's Field Ecology Camp. Several of the campers joined us on net runs and released birds. A Tiger Spiketail dragonfly was caught (and removed intact) from one of the nets, and a Gray Petaltail was also seen. A copperhead and an Eastern Milk Snake were found under two of reptile tins at the ozone garden. Our next banding day is June 30th. Nets open at 6:20.
