Today (13 Jan) at about 9:45am, I observed a female or imm. male
Townsend's Warbler at Wilbur Lake, near Elizabethton in upper east Tenn.
(directions below). It was seen near the bridge, at the entrance to the
Horseshoe Bend Church driveway, in a mixed flock of chickadees, titmice,
& kinglets etc. It seemed to prefer pines and was foraging fairly low
(5-25 ft.). Five local birders searched for it during mid-to-late
afternoon with no luck. This area has extensive suitable habitat, so
the warbler could be anywhere, if it stays at all -- but near the church
would be a good place to start looking. I think that it would be a
gamble to come from very far to look for it, but "nothing ventured /
nothing gained", as they say. It was a very striking bird,
superficially resembling a Black-throated Green, but with a dark cheek
patch (surrounded by yellow) and a bright yellow throat & breast, white
belly, bold black streaks on the sides, bold white wing bars, and
greenish crown & back.

Directions: In Elizabethton, take hwy 91 northeast (toward Shady
Valley); in about 3 miles (about 1.5 miles past small airport) turn
right (at traffic light, sign for Wilbur & Watauga Dams); stay straight
for about 1.7 miles (keeping toward the river) then turn right crossing
a narrow bridge and continue straight on this road following the river
(in about 1.8 miles you will pass Wilbur Dam); continue up this road to
the first parking area on the left, which is immediately before the
bridge; walk toward the bridge, up to the Horseshoe Bend Church or back
along the road.

Sorry this is late, but I was in the field until late afternoon, then
had a bird club meeting tonight.
