Harpeth River Greenway/Morton Mill Road Lake Davidson Co. Bellevue, TN 2009 Sept. 3 Thursday evening my wife Bonnie and I went for a walk at the Harpeth River Greenway on the SW side of Nashville. It was as if the rains of the early morning had washed away all the birds and brought out all the bugs. The large group of MALLARDs and KILLDEER of previous evenings were nowhere to be seen. Eventually we spotted a female SCARLET TANAGER and a male BLUE GROSBEAK. Then a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT circled the small lake several times before opting to sit on a tree snag instead of on the water. In following the cormorant in flight, several COMMON NIGHTHAWKs flew through my binocular field of view. Suddenly I realized that there was a major kettle heading north. In all I estimated 150+ birds, an enjoyable sight. Unfortunately, they were flying too high to scoop up all the bugs that seemed to find us so attractive.
