Just a follow up to the note on Tennessee Warblers sent in by Chuck N. On
Big Bald, Unicoi County, I very often see large groups of TEWA's on patches
of "weeds" where angelica is a predominant plant. They will perch for a
second and then hover under the angelica, apparently picking insects from
the lower side of the seed heads/flowers. I saw a group of about 10 on one
small patch that just kept coming back to the same plants. It is
interesting to watch them hover, especially now that they have gotten so
"heavy" (many this time of year are weighing in at 12-14 grams whereas they
were only 9-11 grams earlier in the season). They cannot maintain a hover
for longer than a few seconds.
