Feb. 27-28, 2009 TVA and Robco Lakes Shelby Co. TN Tunica Co. MS A noon time trip, to TVA Lake on Friday, yielded lots of Lesser and Greater Scaup plus a snazzy female LONG-TAILED DUCK, also the leucistic Lesser Scaup has returned for her 5th year and today all of the above were present again just after noon. Robco Lake has been vacated by the huge scaup flocks and today there were less than 2 dozen ducks on the lake but one was a fancy male Red-breasted Merganser. Last week on a trip down to Tunica Co. in the area around the dump, I located a nice array of gulls including Bonaparte's, thousands of Ring-bills, Herring and bonus birds such as 2 CALIFORNIA GULLS (1 second year and 1 molting adult) a Laughing, a Franklin's and a first year THAYER'S. Friday a quick trip down there produced one of the most interesting, all dark gull that I'm still trying to nail down. Today, the Laughing and Thayer's were located but the weather pretty much shut viewing down so I'll be back tomorrow. Last week I also located 2 SANDERLING near the gulls, my first for February this far north. A really funny event was watching 3 Ring-billed Gulls MOON WALKING. It took me a while to figure out what was going on in the middle of the tightly packed flock. It seems the ice they were standing on had broken loose, was quickly floating in a current and these 3 gulls were just trying to stay in place, walking like crazy and slowly going backward. You just never know what you are going to see........just be there or you will miss it. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
