David, The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has a publication called Woodworking for Wildlife that details nest box plans for a couple dozen different birds. The barn owl is included in that publication. Copies of Woodworking for Wildlife may be obtained by request to this office by mail, telephone, or email. The barn owl nest does not have to be a complicated structure. I have seen them nesting on top of grain in a full grain bin that had been left partially open, as well as in an old badger hole in a cut bank. Nebraska Game and Parks has placed 55 gallon barrels with an opening cut in one end into banks and barns specifically for barn owl nest sites. Those placements were successful. I have a friend in McMinn Co with a barn that is open for storage of hay where he would like to encourage barn owls to nest and rear young. He is very wildlife oriented but not a birder. We could use a few more of these guys around to help with the mousing! Thanks in advance.
