16 Aug 2010 Montgomery Cty, TN Fort Campbell Yesterday around 4:45 in the afternoon I observed a Swallow-tailed kite soaring near my office building when I was walking after work. Unfortunately I did not get a great look as I did not have my binocs on me, but the kite silhouette was distinctive and the black and white contrast on the underwing was clear. The forked tail appeared to be fairly short. A co-worker informed me this morning that she observed the bird yesterday morning less than a 1/4 mile from the spot where I saw it. Another co-worker, Dawn York, and I went out this morning to look for it, but it was not seen. A large bottomland Walnut tree plantation with thick river cane winding along a creek lies below our office. This is the first Swallow-tailed kite and the third kite species documented on Ft Campbell (others were Mississippi & White-tailed).
