10/24/2016Carroll Co 1000 Acre Recreational Lake This afternoon around 2 PM I
made a quick swing into Carroll Co Lake on the off chance something might be
around. I've had very little luck here in the past, but as we all know.....you
never know! Not much going on, a few Gadwall and Mallards initially, then a
group of Pied-billed Grebes with an interesting dark duck swimming with them,
away from me initially. This was very distant, but first impression was a
Scoter, and when it finally turned for a good profile, female-type Surf Scoter
it was. After just a few minutes the Scoter separated from the Grebes. When I
first saw it, I was scanning from the main boat launch area, looking towards
the levee. The bird then swam by itself along the far shoreline, to the
southeast. When I left it was still in view, but several areas of this lake
aren't visible from land. As I said, the bird was very distant (1/4 mile
anyway), but I got a couple of digiscopes if anyone is interested; first one is
