The Tennessee Ornithological Society Annual Fall Meeting held at Greeneville was a neat weekend and the Greeneville TOS Chapter was a fine host. It is hard to say too much about their organization and detail. We had a good turnout of birders from across the state. Don Miller and Alice Loftin headed up Greeneville area biders who were on hand to take care of food, registration and meeting facilities. The modern, spacious and attractive Comfort Inn was both a delight and real surprise. Four presentations were of particular interest. A graduate student from UT, who has been researching shorebird habitat at Rankin Bottom in Cocke County, displayed an impressive combination of air photos with computer generation of how the habitat for plants and shorebirds changes with each increment drop in Douglas Lake elevation. Charlie Musie gave and update of the Coordinated Bird Monitoring Plan for Tennessee. Don Miller rolled out his fresh-off-the-press: "The Birds of Greene County, Tennessee: A Checklist." It is a field card which is a spinoff from his compilation and work towards a book on the birds of a six-county area which includes Hamblen and all adjacent counties. Fred Alsop gave an update on his planned University of Tennessee Press Tennessee bird book which is expected to be published in three to five years. The TOS board of directors voted to press on with a project to digitize past copies of THE MIGRANT so they can be made available on CD and online. Mike Rodel of TWRA has taken leadership of the project which was funded and approved several years ago but slowly ground to a halt. A long brain storming session held by new TOS President Danny Gaddy resulted in the first steps to reorganize and restart a Tennessee Birds Record Committee which has had difficulties in recent years. A new secretary was named to work with the committee. A state budget process and creation of a special fund for conservation and research drew considerable support with session participants contributing pledges totaling $550 to get the fund underway. President Gaddy's leadership was focused and fresh. Everyone complimented his efforts for the weekend. Let's go birding...... Wallace Coffey Bristol, TN
