Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN About 10:00 AM, Monday, March 3, 2008, I watched two American Mink, Neovison vison, walking west on the gravel road on the north side of the marsh, walking from the gate toward where I was standing near the gas line crossing. I held still; they apparently did not see me, and continued walking toward me. At about 50 feet one of the mink left the road and entered the cattails on the north side of the road. The other mink continued walking toward me and passed within five feet of me. As I twisted in order to keep watching, it noticed me and went into the cattails on the south side of the road. They appeared large and well fed, estimated 20 to 22 inches nose to tip of tail. They were very dark gray to dull black all over. They were silent and unhurried. I have seen apparent mink and/or weasel-like animals at the marsh a few times before, but this is the only really good observation. There is some descriptive information on Wikipedia under American Mink.
