A big question in everyone's mind after yesterday's record-breaking flight at
Soddy Mountain,TN was whether we would get good numbers of Broad-wings again
today. It sure didn't start out that way as the weatherman's prediction of
partly cloudy skies turned into a 100% layer of thin clouds before 10:00am.
From 8:15-11:00 we saw exactly 3 hawks - 1 Merlin, 1 sharpie, 1 Broad-wing.

In the 11:00 hour a kettle of 65 glided right over the lookout. Didn't see
much in the noon hour. This was followed by kettles of 52 and 40 between
1:00 and 2:00. At 2:11 another kettle of 101 was spotted by Cynthia
Wilkerson.

Woody and Becky Woodiel from McMinnville arrived right at 3:00. They must
have brought a bag of tricks with them! At 3:02 a "super" kettle of 250 was
spotted by Bill Haley on the left side of the dip. This was followed 4
minutes later by another 25. The crew had to wait another 26 minutes for the
action to start again but were rewarded with another "mega" kettle of 350,
followed five minutes later by one of 100, then a mere 2 (we had gotten
spoiled), but this was followed by another good kettle of 125, which passed
directly over the lookout at low altitude. Nice! All but the last kettle
were specks in the distance. Final hour total = 852 Broad-winged Hawks. A
new hourly record!

Final day totals, 9/24/02:
3 - OS
2 - BE
6 - SS
1154 - BW
1 - AK
1 - ML

1 - UA
_______
1168 - Total

Counters today were: Jim Rowell, Bill Haley, Roi Shannon, Jimmy Wilkerson,
Cynthia Wilkerson, Carol Fegarido, Woody and Becky Woodiel.

P.S. After recounting the Broad-wing total from 9/23, it officially now
stands at 1733.
This is the first time we have ever gotten 1000+ on consecutive days!

A special thanks to Ron Harrington and crew at Mendota for their reports to
Tn-Bird. We believe there is a possibility we are seeing some of your hawks
and it's nice to know that tomorrow or the next day we may have good numbers
based on what you saw today! THANKS!

Jimmy Wilkerson for Bill Haley
Hixson / Chattanooga, Tn.
