On July 7, David Haskell joined us for an evening cruise to Little Elder Island on Woods Reservoir in Franklin Co. to attempt a wading bird survey. We elected to count juvenile birds only because so many birds were already fledged from the nest and adults were constantly moving in and out of the area, making double counts probable. Even these numbers may be somewhat adjusted on a later count as we hope to have the guidance of Scott Somershoe one day next week. First the most exciting news... Two adult Snowy Egrets tending two chicks in the nest which we previously had reported! The following species (juveniles) were observed on our count as well: 30 Black-crowned Night-Heron 141 Cattle Egret (probably a low count) 18 Little Blue Heron 3 Great Egret 11 Great Blue Heron Curiously absent were any juvenile Green Herons.
