Hi folks,

Yesterday I led a group of folks to some wetlands areas in Cades Cove
(Blount County, Great Smoky Mountains National Park). It wasn't a
birding trip, but, well, I couldn't really resist... On top of the
damselfly larvae, frogs and salamanders, we saw the following birds:

Canada Geese
Wood Ducks
Mallard
Turkey Vulture
Red-shouldered Hawk
Broad-winged Hawk
Wild Turkey
SPOTTED SANDPIPER
Solitary Sandpiper - at least a dozen at the sewage lagoons
Mourning Dove
Chimney Swift
Belted Kingfisher
Northern Flicker
Pileated Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE
Eastern Phoebe
Tree Swallow
Barn Swallow
Northern Rough-winged Swallow (at least 100 at the lagoons)
BANK SWALLOW Twice I saw an individual, presumably the same one.
Mixed in with the rough-wingeds. The bar across the neck was
distinct. First time I've seen this species in Blount County.
Blue Jay
American Crow
Carolina Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Brown Creeper - singing
Carolina Wren
GRAY CATBIRD
American Robin
Eastern Bluebird
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
American Pipit - I've had them at the lagoons EVERY time I've been
there this year, probably about 10 trips.
European Starling
Black-and-white Warbler
Northern Parula
Black-throated Green Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Pine Warbler
Ovenbird
Louisiana Waterthrush
Eastern Meadowlark
Common Grackle
Red-winged Blackbird
Brown-headed Cowbird
Scarlet Tanager
Northern Cardinal
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
American Goldfinch
Chipping Sparrow
Song Sparrow

Today at Tremont I found my first Acadian Flycatcher of the year.
This puts my Blount County list for 2005 at 148.

Charlie
