Jim Arnett and I birded the Growild nursery in Williamson county this
morning in nice Fall weather, hoping mainly for a rare Sparrow.
Nothing rare except for a fairly late immature male Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
We also had at least three Purple Finches, a flock of at least a dozen
foraging Pine Siskins among the thistles at eye level. Seems that the
finches and siskins are irruptive this year just as the nuthatches are.
We had one FOS (for me anyway) Fox Sparrow, tons of Chipping,
White-throated, Field, and Song Sparrows, some Swamps, plus two Savannah
Sparrows, and a couple of Dark-eyed Juncos.
As a reminder, and for those unfamiliar, Growild is private property and
can only be visited with prior permission. They also have friends who hunt
deer out there, and they were hunting today so we were restricted to only
the higher ground in the front part of the property.
