Sam and Nancy Jones, who live down the road from me here in Bellevue (w. Nashville), emailed me yesterday about a white goose that was hanging out with the domestics at the little pond in their subdivision. Today, I dropped by to see it and photograph it. Based on the "single white goose" theory that suggests that most single white geese in TN are Ross's, that's what I was expecting. When I pulled up and saw the bird sleeping, I was sure it was right based on its small size. However, when I got out of my truck, it pulled its head up and I could clearly see the "grin patch" on the bill that is diagnostic for Snow Goose. The size is indicative of the Lesser subspecies, which is the one expected here.
